What Is Age-Related Macular
Degeneration?
The macula is the part of the retina that is the central vision, allowing people to see fine details clearly. As the name suggests, age-related macular degeneration is the gradual loss to see objects clearly and in color. Often a dark or empty area will appear in the center of vision, or objects can appear distorted and crooked.
Macular degeneration often leads to a complete loss of vision, but it usually begins in just one eye. This causes people to remain unaware of their slow deterioration until they have a very noticeable vision problem. There are two types of macular degeneration—atrophic (dry), which is caused by aging and the thinning of the macula tissues, and exudative (wet), which occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the retina.
What are Cataracts?
Cataracts are one of the leading causes of vision loss. It starts out small, with blurred vision, and later grows to cloud the entire natural lens of an eye as proteins clump together and interfere with the passage of light through the eye. Cataracts can result from injury, ailments such as diabetes, chronic eye diseases, or severe medications and treatments involving radiation or
steroids.
Most common types of cataracts include:
1. Cortical cataract, which starts in the
periphery of the lens and works its way to
the center;
2. Subcapsular caract, which occurs at the
back of the lens; and
3. Nuclear cataract, which forms deep in the central zone of the lens and usually due to aging.
